Actually, if they were able to repair a lightning damaged rig for $800, 
he got a good deal. A friend of mine who is a technician for Icom 
usually doesn't even attempt to repair lightning damage. $800 is cheaper 
than a replacement Mark V, but some people are never happy.

Now, if your friend didn't want Yaesu to fix his rig, he should have 
called them sometime during the two months they had the rig and told 
them to ship it back to him.
