It is generally not possible to remove the bearings from any US built WW-II
or Korean War vintage military dynamotor without destroying the bearings.
So never remove bearings just for cleaning. The reason is that the inner
race should be a press fit on the shaft. You should never pull a ball bearing
pressed onto a shaft by pulling on the outer race because you will damage
the balls and the races by something called "Brinelling". Because of the way
that all of the armatures are made, you cannot get a puller on the inner
race, which is the only part that it is safe to pull or push on. Whether you
use a crudely modified battery terminal puller or a proper 3-jaw puller or a
pair of vise grips and a 5 pound hammer, you are going to destroy the
bearing if you pull it. So don't remove it unless you have a new replacement on
hand.
If the bearings are shielded or shielded and sealed and you have no new
replacements, the only reasonable procedure is to remove and discard the
shields (which will also discard the seals) in place. and clean and lubricate the
bearings and hope for the best.
