[Boatanchors] OT but maybe not

This may be slightly OT, but maybe not because its a question about an old antenna by Hygain.
I have two of the 11 element two meter beams mounted for horizontal polarization and stacked side by side.
My question is this ... generally and then specifically.
Does the type of driven element feed method matter when it comes to the type of driven element and the spacing of the
beam elements?
Specifically, I want to take down these two antennas and do some refurbishing. The feed type of this Hygain antenna is a gamma match type. Can I remove the gamma match driven element and simply replace it with, say, a dipole type driven element, or even a folded dipole type driven element, or does the antenna spacing of this Hygain two meter beam REQUIRE a gamma match for the parasitic element spacing Hygain used?
Would appreciate any thoughts from you antenna experts out there.
