Explained quite well in most any RCA tube manual. If you like math then
Radiotron Designers Handbook 4th Edition is considered the bible.

The 6BE6 is simply a later version of the 6SA7 which is an improved 6K8
which is an improved 1934 2A7. The self excited oscillator was also used in
several product detectors of dubious performance.

Subject: [Boatanchors] 6BE6 VFO/Mixer Tube

I am trying to figure out how the 6BE6 works with a VFO and a mixer in the
same tube.

1. Where is the output of the VFO or oscillator?
2. isn't the output of the plate of the 6BE6 the sum or minus of the two
signals coming in? The one from the previous amplifier and the VFO?
3. Where would you pick off RF or use a counter probe to see what the VFO is
doing?

It seems the 6BE6 was being used like this in a score of old receivers. I
get the tube is using feeback through the cathode...but I just don't get the
output of the VFO? Where is that? For instance...the Drake 2B.
