Being an old Instrument and Control Engineer , in power plants , I always
stretch my tubing before working with it . "Small diameter" , up to 1/4 " or
so , not hard drawn .

Hold it solidly in place on one end and I have a long bar and a chain ,
where I can hook the other end in and then stretch it until it is completely
straight .

Then I too wrap it around a former , usually a piece of PVC , depending on
the size of coil I am winding . It woks quite nice , and I have also used
the sand method which works well too .
