Bob -
The Drake is somewhat better mechanically. The Collins is somewhat
better mechanically than the Drake.
The Heath twins always felt a little "flimsy" to me after using the
Drakes. Electrically there are some differences, I believe the Drake
AVC is superior to the Heath. When it comes to hearing stations "on the
air", there isn't a whole lot of difference between the Heath and Drake,
the Collins is slightly better than either, primarily due to mechanical
filters and lower thermal noise because of the reduced operating voltages.
The Heath knobs, dial, etc., are just "cheap". The Drake is much more
"solid" mechanically, both in feel and reality. The Collins is
beautiful, machined housings instead of bent sheet metal, etc. and has
the best 'feel' of them all.
All that said, I sold my Heath twins some years ago. I use my Drake
B-Line day-to-day. My C-Line and S-Line are boxed up in the closet.
