I've been noting the comments about Collins, most especially the
S-line. The single civilian piece of equipment over which I have
drooled a bunch is the KWM-2A. Is it snob appeal? I have no clue but
I want one with the full crystal kit, both mobile and mains power
supplies and 180S antenna tuner (though a 180L would be ever so
cooler.) Every one I've talked to who had one loved it and couldn't
be talked into selling.
At one point in my life, I had a G-133 which is a repackaged 51S-1.
Until someone got greedy when I was moving to the boat, that was my
station receiver and I could not have asked for better. That's what
cemented my decision to get a KWM-2A (which would be in keeping with
my surplus or homebrew only status since that is also the centerpiece
of the AN/FRC-93[?]), of which one has eluded me since simply due to
price.
This is NOT to say that the Drake and Heathkit offerings aren't
excellent products. The Heath twins were (and are?) known as the poor
man's S-line for more reasons than just appearance. I don't know
anything about Drake so decline to comment there. In the end, though,
the "best" is what works right for you. Anything else is secondary.
Best regards,
Michael, Wh7HG
