[Boatanchors] 6146 A or B ?

That is what happens on most, but not all, of the transmitters designed for the 6146 or the 6146A/8298. I have run into like 3 transmitters of exactly the same model and with serial numbers within 10 of each other in which 1 of the transmitters worked fine with the 6146B/8298A and the other 2 were VERY unhappy! Probably, the component tolerances added up "just right" on the transmitter that worked fine with the 6146B/8298A.

That is why I say that most, but not all, transmitters designed for the earlier versions don't work with the later tubes. There are people who have used the 6146B/8298A in several transmitters who haven't had any problems. However, those people are in a minority when all of the transmitters are considered.

It would appear to me that the Hammarlund HX-500 is another transmitter which does not like 6146B tubes.  The "A" and the plain-Jane 6146 work fine but the rig takes off with the "B" tubes, especially if the bias mod has not been done.
