FWIW, W tubes were sold to either the government
directly or to government contractors. Some of these tubes
may have had to meet special specifications but probably
most were simply stock tubes that may have had to be tested
before packaging.
In many cases the difference between a plain tube and
its A version is controlled heater warm up. Since the 6146
was widely used in mobile equipment that may apply to it. I
think the B version has somewhat higher plate dissipation.
