[Boatanchors] NEWBIE PART 2

VLF to 30mc...that's a pretty broad freq. range. You may need two receivers to accomplish that....which ain't bad if ya like boatanchors. Or, you may have to go with some type of military or marine receiver to get all that coverage in one rcvr or use a norm. coverage rcvr with a VLF converter.

Dales suggestion about the Drake receivers is very good. They pack a lot of rcvr in a small box, but may require xtra xtals for freqs outside the ham bands. But if you want something a bit heavier and still do a good job...and I know everyone has their own favorites...and mine would be the Hammarlund HQ-150. Its fairly easy to re-cap, alignment not too big a job, with the proper instruments and they can still be found. My reason for liking mine is that I work mostly CW...it has a good xtal filter, plus a good Q-multiplier..makes CW a pleasure. Also it is pretty stable after a good warm up...and can be kept pretty close on freq. with the included calib. Covers BC band to 30mc and sounds great on AM, esp with the big Hammarlund or other make spkr. And yes, there are many others that will do a good job too.

What you might want to do is make a list of all the features, freq. coverage, size, price, etc you want...that is, make a engineering project out of it...and then look for a rcvr that meets your requirements. There are just too many to choose from to not have a plan. When you do settle on a rcvr, look it over closely and be sure you can handle any faults, frailties and fixes. Just my humble opinion.

Good luck...73 de Bill K4JYS

Hi Preston and welcome to the list.
You might want to expand on your request a bit and specify just what you will be doing with your first boatanchor receiver, that is: just SWLing, primarily for CW, primarily for AM ham use, good freq readout, etc. There are a lot of boatanchor receivers out there, some are great and some are not. And prices vary accordingly. Also, you may need to do some work on your choice depending on condx...tell us more.
