      Try searching for outphasing modulation or Chireix 
modulation. Ampliphase was a trade name used by RCA for a 
version of this. Its a clever idea that is hard to 
accomplish in practice as RCA found to their chagrin. The 
method was first (?) described by H.Chireix in a paper in 
the _Procedings of the Institute of Electrical Engineers_ in 
1935. Some very high power transmitters were built in Europe 
but proved too troublesom.
      In theory it should provide a low distortion, high 
efficiency method of modulation without the need for a 
modulation transformer, but its too critical of adjustment 
and did not prove practical.
