Try searching for outphasing modulation or Chireix
modulation. Ampliphase was a trade name used by RCA for a
version of this. Its a clever idea that is hard to
accomplish in practice as RCA found to their chagrin. The
method was first (?) described by H.Chireix in a paper in
the _Procedings of the Institute of Electrical Engineers_ in
1935. Some very high power transmitters were built in Europe
but proved too troublesom.
In theory it should provide a low distortion, high
efficiency method of modulation without the need for a
modulation transformer, but its too critical of adjustment
and did not prove practical.
