Let me add my two cents worth to this discussion:

I never liked the idea of Facebook but I joined several months ago after 
I found out my daughter, who I had lost contact with for over ten 
years,  was using it.
Since that time I have had so much email crap from them (Facebook) 
telling me what her friends were doing and unsolicited 'friend' 
requests. (I have since stopped using Facebook for that reason).

I guess when you stop and think about it these email 'reflectors' are a 
form of "Social Media"!

Gee wiz, what di we do befor we had computers?  WE TALKED ON THE RADIO.
