Larry,
I use the USPS rate calculator page rather frequently:
http://www.usps.com/tools/calculatepostage/welcome.htm
There are three addresses to which the bulk of our package
mail is sent and when the USPS has rate changes, I make up a
little matrix of the weight cross over points where per pound
Priority mail rates are more expensive than flat rate Priority
Mail costs.
Just recently, I had a batch of items my wife wanted to send to
her sister in Florida, and I did a cross comparison of using one
large box or two medium flat rate "shoe" boxes. The combined
cost of mailing the two flat rates was slightly cheaper than the
cost of mailing one larger (and heavier) non-flat rate box.
