Being in New England I can tell you that Rt 91 has become the "smuggler's
highway".  Seems immigration did crack down on the roads in NY (the Northway
and the NYS Thruway).  Route 7 through Vermont now seems to be watched
pretty well by the VT state police, with suspicious cars routinely stopped.

It's a pretty quick ride from Burlington VT or even the 'NE Kingdom' in VT
right into NYC (83, 91 and I-95).

And... there is practically no 'interior enforcement' by INS anymore.  I
think it's a combination of lack of manpower and lack of court time to
process illegals.  Those that die get caught get appearance dates 12-16
month in the future... meanwhile they're allowed to stay in the US if they
'promise' to appear...

When I was a kid, we lived in NE Vermont right across the street from
Canada... Only a small stone marker to designate the border.  Hunters,
fishermen, and hikers routinely walked back and forth, as did we.  I would
routinely walk to a friend's house across the border to watch TV as they had
an antenna tower....... When I returned to NYC and into 6th grade, I was
about the only kid who could say "I walked to a foreign country"..
