Hello Group:
Interesting that not much changes in HF area since Kneitel's "Top Secret
Registry of US Government Frequencies" (6th edition 1998) lists similiar
(offset by 1.5Khz) frequencies at about 11 DOE facilities & 1 headquarters
location.
His book lists 18 locations of facilities & potential frequencies at those
facilities including: Labs, Weapons Materials, Weapons Producton, Nuclear
Weapons Assembly, Weapons Designing, & headquarters) Lots of frequencies
are listed (small amount) low band VHF, (many) high band VHF, and some UHF
band. Taking a "quick look" at the listings it apears that about 4
Highband VHF frequencies & 2 UHF frequencies are common at weapons
materials/production facilities, which might indicate a common
calling/coordination frequencies for convoy operations.
Grove's (Larry VH's) "Federal Frequency Directory", 2001 edition (on CD
ROM) lists the following
(my summary, approximate totals)
30-50 mhz 17 Nationwide, 18 shared
148-150 mhz 0 nationwide, 7 shared
162-174 mhz 29 nationwide, 160 shared
402-420 mhz 26 nationwide, 165 shared
It would appear to me that the nationwide allocation frequencies would have
the most potential for being utilized in nuclear weapons/materials convoys.
BTW, perhaps may 35 years ago, there was a TV movie about a nuclear weapons
convoy that got hijacked at a particular point in the road where all
communications would be lost for a short period of time. Surely fictional ---
I know Larry VH lists HF BUT I would assume that weapons are involved they
would have some sort of satellite tracking/status reporting that would show
automatically where the vehicle is (and these same services are available
to commercial trucking fleets) & perhaps has a help/distress button
(commercial trucks have this) that when press sends out a distress signal
and based upon the GPS coordinates the control center knows the location.
Will be very interesting to see if news media covers the convoys out of
Rocky Flats CO to Savannah River SC site.....
