I think that you will find that the cache freqs are used in many
imaginative ways. Dont be suprised to see inputs used as outputs, and
vice versa. They also can do double hops across 2 mountain tops in
really remote areas with these portable repeaters. They can also
crossband from VHF-AM to 400 Mhz. 

For example, if the nearest airport is in a valley, and the fire is a
couple of mountains away, they could put a VHF AM base station on
mountain A overlooking the fire, and then send the audio via 414.xx to
mountain B, where a 2nd repeater will send the audio via 419.XX to the
command center at the airport. The reverse trip might use entirely
different freqs to get the audio from the command center to the VHF AM
base station. They have had this capability for over 10 years I think.
