Yes, they suck.  I tried one on my syntor and it radiated big time, inside
the vehicle! I've also found Antennex antennas to be poor quality.  If you
want 450 or 800 stubbys the Larsens and Maxrads work pretty well. On VHF I
think the old 15" whip is about the lowest profile you can find.
