A&E network televised a rerun a few days back about the United States
Department Of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security... (of course I didn't
have the tape recorder ready :( ), BUT it was interesting to see segments
on the various bureau missions. Many of the security personnel were using
very small w/t's with earphone/wrist type microphones.
Additional official information can be found at:
http://www.state.gov/m/ds/
I took a quick look at "Grove's Frequency Directory" (lst edition) CD-ROM
to see what potential frequenices would be in use. Frequencies were listed
under "Department of State" search term 'DOS'. 25 frequency hits:
*VHF High band (total 10 frequencies, 3 designated as nationwide
*UHF band 14 frequency pairs, 1 simplex, 4 pairs designated as nationwide.
(I would guess that any of the frequencies could be used as simplex).
I also looked at Tom Kneitel's "The 'Top Secret' Registry of U.S. Government
Frequencies" 8th edition (1993) listed fixed transmitter/repeater sites (by
city) in CA (4), DC (5), FL(1), IL(1), MA(1), NY (2), PA(1), TN(1), TX (1),
VA (3), which is probably the US field offices (that mentioned in the A&E
telecast) Kneitel's list differs also in some frequencies listing
including the use of VHF Low Band (4) & it appears that Grove's has got
more UHF freqs listed. There also was some difference in the VHF High Band
freqs listed. BTW NYC & Washington D.C. had the most # of frequencies
listed.
If you have any diplomatic visits in your area you might try monitoring all
of the state department freqs -- perhaps you will hear something (although
it's probably all encrypted now!!!) BUT most likely the local PD freqs will
be the most active.
