'The Discovery Channel' showed a program "Deadly Dentist" this last Saturday
that included a reenactment of the ATF setting up audio surveillance in a
home of a willing informant.

What was interesting is that the actual (master?) receiver/transmitter was
wired in the recess of a light switch. The reenactment showed agents across
the street from the condo listening from a van. BTW the audio bugs were
removed since the criminal mentioned something about bugs and knowing all
the wiring in the house.

Additionally, the same informant used a portable wire while talking with the
"deadly dentist" at a local restaurant & the BATF was also parked close by
maintaining both audio & video surveillance.

So this would indicate that at least in this reenactment that the audio bugs
were of relatively short distance.

BTW check out the new website and name:
http://www.atf.treas.gov/

Now the bureau is known as "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, &
Explosives" (BATFE? or ATFE?)
