Gentlemen,
I would like to tap some of the wonderful knowledge base that is the Fedcom
Mail List and ask for some assistance from the members.
For many years now I have seen posts making reference to the use of the
Motorola / Harris SENECA radios. I first researched this topic back in 2002
and found little, if any, specific information on the web about these
radios. Another recent round of research has yielded even less hard
information on these radios and what they really are / were. Most all the
links that come up on searches are variations on the Motorola press release
from back in 1998 and nothing newer.
Some list posts seemed to indicate that the SENECA radio was a completely
new communications standard, possibly trunked, that was to be used by
federal agencies. Others indicated that the radios were Motorola radio
chassis that had Harris-built data and encryption technology installed. The
original Motorola press release that I did find and read years ago (but can'
t find now) seemed to indicate that the SENECA technology was the encryption
scheme used in the Astro Seneca radio.
In any case, I am hoping that some of the very intelligent and experienced
members of this list might be able to help steer me towards any sort of
publicly available information on the Motorola / Harris SENECA radios. Was
the technology ever deployed in the field, and how does the SENECA
technology fit with the apparent goal of APCO-25 as the digital radio
platform of the federal government?
On list or private e-mail is fine, and thanks in advance to all the Fedcom
members helping with any information
- Chris
