Hopefully this gets through after 5 times ( Ithink the filter mailman qth
isn't
adjusted properly).
When those ARNG Helos fly these missions, at least for the "MJ"
missions, they use their typical callsign assigned to the unit or
just GUARD COPTER XXXXX on typical FAA Air Traffic Control
frequencies. Locally they use the OH 58's with FLIR to ID the
plants.
Recently fairly close to my workplace there was a "mission" going on
and I didn't pickup any frequencies in use, including using "signal stalker"
My guess is that they use primarily NEXTEL in "walkie talkie" mode
if on the network and/or "direct talk" if the network isn't available.
Some hobbyists also think that they might have some low powered
portables on the DEA frequencies. It also possible that they use the
local law enforcement area coordination net. It's
Remember that the NG is only in a support role and not in a law
enforcement role, so there's always going to be law enforcement flying with
them & also on the ground response team(s). It's doubtful that DEA
has agents always on the teams.
I've also got to wonder if Civil Air Patrol aircraft are used initially to
spot potential areas first, since those C172/C182's cost per flight is about
300% less than
the flying hour cost of a OH58 or UH60. Additionally is CAP's "ARCHER"
system being employed in this role now?
