Hearing extensive DES scrambling way up on the end
of the VHF hi band tonight, literally. Specifically the
frequency 173.9875. First time I have heard anything
scrambled in the VHF fed band past 173.8875 (an ATF
allocation) in over 20 years of monitoring. So far, all
scrambled - no voice traffic. But my gut feeling says
FBI related, and a repeater. Doesn't have that simplex
fading in and out sound. It's a very strong signal here.
Will let everyone know if I get voice or a tone. Hopefully
soon.
On a similar note, 170.675 (a believed FBI SOG
repeater) here in the DFW area (always encrypted)
has seen a lot of "in the clear" traffic and surveillance
use lately. Sometimes two units clear talk, other times
the 50/50 thing where one unit is scrambled, and the
other in the clear.
