FWIW, I can confirm that candidates campaign
camps can use all kinds of comm techniques,
however, in today's age, it's usually a cell phone
or Blackberry...:)

Back in the 1988 Democratic Covention in Atlanta, the
Dukakis folks were using a community repeater in the
460 range (rental radio), that could be heard metro-wide.

During two presidential debates in St. Louis, candidates
staff were using VHF and UHF itinerant rental radios as well,
but you had to be relatively close to the campaign or
event site (luckily I WAS). Media will pop up on some
goofy frequencies too during these things, as out of
town and network media usually don't want to interfere
with the locals in the 450 & 455 bands.

Rental (itinerant) radios or FRS seem to be the norm.
Certainly if I were trekking all over the country, it would
be the way to go financial-wise, along with my PDA &
cell phone.
