Not sure if you have a squadron or wing in your area,
but you may want to meet some of the members. CAP
flies a wide category of missions in support of DHS,
DEA and a host of federal agencies.
Where I live, the Coast Guard is swamped especially in
the warmer months with recreational boaters. CAP is
flying countless missions along the coastline but also
inland where critical infrastructure is located. There
are oil refineries, power plants and other facilities
that are at risk. You do a great disservice by mocking
these folks who volunteer their time. These threats are
very real. With FLIR, satellite imagery and other
tools, CAP has been a great help. CAP is not big on
publicity for many reasons but I assure you they are a
highly talented group of folks.
As far as P25 is concerned, that has been a gov't
mandate for several years. There simply isn't enough
spectrum available and the older radio systems occupy
to much bandwidth. I know this having spent several
years in frequency management with DOD.
As for encryption, I don't think that they have to
answer to you or I.
As to we listenening hobbiests, I feel that we were
besmirched when the Discovery channel did that show
with Bob Grove and others in the "Black Helicopter"
set
were taunting security officials at the so called
"Area 51" site. Someone should tell them that a UH-60
helicopter is black and not to worry.
Just my inflated .02 cents worth.
With all due respect,
db
