Hi all. The base I'm talking about is the former Coast Guard Island,
then it changed it's name to Integrated Support Unit, Alameda and now
USCG Base, Alameda. It is in the middle of the Oakland-Alameda Estuary,
within The City of Alameda although the only vehicle access is from
Oakland. This is not the old Naval Air Station in Alameda.
Several years ago it was one of two boot camps that the Coast Guard
had. It is now HQ for The Coast Guards 11Th Coast Guard District which
covers all of Calif, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and HQ for The Coast
Guards Pacific Area & Defense Force West, which is a 3 star job, with
one person commanding both jobs. Pac Area covers 74 million square
miles ranging from South America to the Arctic Circle and from Montana
to Madagascar.
The three National Security Cutters (Legends class) mentioned below use
a Hydra 380 to 399.9975 trunked analog radio system.
As for the former NAS The xUSS Hornet CV-12 museum is at Pier 3 and the
rest of the piers are used for ready reserve ships, which are ships
owned by the US Gov't Maritime Administration, maned by civilians and
kept in a surge status.
Some of the buildings / hangers have been rented, although I'm not up on
all that. One hanger is a sports facility, one is a wine brewery, one
is a movie studio and one is making green cars, I think. There is a
museum at the old operations building also.
That's about all I know, hope this helps.
