[FedCom] AREA 51 & Bob Grove

Argh, the stinkin' HTML mail on my phone caused my reply to be
filtered. Here it is again.

It wasn't exactly a good appearance, no insult to Bob Grove. The irony
of that special is I was asked to be the guide going up Tikaboo, but I
had just finished doing the hike twice about a month before I got the
call, and I have little respect for these Area 51 specials. If they
asked me to do the scanner monitoring, the video would have been much
better since I actually have base frequencies.‎

When Bob is scanning voices in the clear, ‎it is not the camo dudes.
They are on a DES encrypted EDACS system. Then terrible video editing
mixes up images of aircraft while then cutting away to  non-air
frequencies.  

But best of all was the security expert. He didn't know where the
border was located at the back gate. ‎When I saw this video, I was at a
house in Rachel and we laughed our assess off how they were staying
away from the gate, so we went and set up a BBQ right next to the guard
shack.

The camo dudes were freaked. You could see them peaking from behind the
blinds.

To elaborate a bit, the only signals you can hear in the clear are
airband, both VHF and UHF. While they could use encrypted transmissions
in the airband, they don't bother. You can't tell much from what you
hear Much of what you hear is related to dynamic RCS. They drop
circular radar "balls" from aircraft for calibration, then you hear the
test article fly tracks. It is not as exciting as you would think.

You can also monitor mode-s of the aircraft using the base.
Unfortunately there is no ADS-B tracking.
