Hi Tim:

I have not shipped tty machines, but I have received quite a few that have
been shipped to me.  

It seems that the best protection of a heavy module, like a typing unit, is
to wrap it tightly in several inches of bubble wrap and then tape it all
tightly.  The large-bubble stuff seems best.  

The resulting ball of bubble-wrapped machinery is then placed in a heavy
box that gets filled with styrofoam peanuts.  The box is sized so that
there is at least four inches of peanuts on each side.

When the box is taped, you can increase the tear strength by also taping
all twelve edges.

I cannot say that one carrier is better than another, since UPS, FedEx, and
USPS all seem to drop boxes with similar frequency.  But this time of year,
I would not ship USPS.

For big items that are bolted or shrink-wrapped to a pallet, the trip is
usually better, since the freight company handles everything with forklifts
(no humans to drop the box).
