Henry et al,
I have heard that the government has TTY's squirreled away for use if we get
hit by a nuclear blast. Seems the mechanical "terminals" aren't affected by
the electromagnetic pulse ("EMP") from a nuke blast like the PC's and such
that are used now. Anything after the Model 28/35 vintage would have too
much electronics to be reliable (like the UGC-74's and UGC-129's). But, do I
know directlyof anyone still using the TTY's...no.
I know that Telemechanics (look at their website) still sells Teletype parts
as part of an agreement when AT&T dumped "Teletype". In fact, Telemechanics
had a want-ad on RTTY.com looking for a Model 35 repairman. They must have
work if they need the talent. I do know that an old acquaintance of mine was
still making a living fixing Model 32/33 machines just a few years ago; he
claimed that most of his customers were "off shore". He was sending shipping
containers full of Model 33's to South America, last I heard. Ironically,
his business was on the same street as Telemechanics, but they had no
business relationship.
