Hi Jack:

I'll keep that in mind, but I think I'll just use the TD as it is. For one
thing, the input shaft/gear would need to be swapped from this lxd into a
normal lxd from an asr, which looks non-trivial. And this one seems to be
working, as far as I can tell so far.

I usually like to keep things original, but I think I will modify this unit
a bit. If I take the circular data connector/bracket out (and relocate the
data wires to the terminal strip), I can mount a little 12VDC adapter
inside to power the solenoid (via the switches), and just have AC going in,
and data coming out. I'm going to try the direct 232-keying approach and
then I can hook the unit right to the computer and use RTTYArt or
HeavyMetal to read and save tapes.

And if I want to put the TD on a current loop, I can just use my TTY232
gizmo. Or spend some time fixing that old M14TD that I havn't touched yet.

I'd appreciate some lubrication advice though. I have an LXD adj/lube
manual, but tips from the pros are always good. Almost ready to read tapes
now.

Hmm, you were harrassing me about using a scope, but here's a good use: I
don't know what this TD is geared for, so I can now look at the bit times.
Yeah, yeah, I could just try all the wpm possibilities I suppose. Well, I
still need to get the 232 levels correct. OK, I could still do that with a
meter. Maybe I'll need to pull out the spectrum analyzer then, and see how
quiet this tempest stuff is.

thanks for the info,

gil
