Thanks Gil,
I enjoyed viewing your pages on TTY machines. As I said, you have a nice
collection,
I have had a number of TTY machines over the years, all used with ham
radio. I started out with what is now a quite rare model14 1/4" tape
printer. Then a TT-4TG by Kleinschmidt. I then had a Model 12 with the
non-synchronous motor that you had to adjust with a tuning fork. I then
graduated to a Model 19 set-up and finally a stand alone model 15 KSR.- I
used them all extensively with ham radio and Mars before moving to computer
RTTY. Now that I am retired, I decided to assemble another RTTY station
using the old mechanical machines for the nostalgia. There was just
nothing like the sound and the smell of oil in the air with the old
machines. And they remain one of the mechanical computing marvels along
with some of the older accounting type mechanical adding machines.
I have a model 28 now that I am working on sans cabinet that I plan to
mount in a close fitting plexiglass enclosure so that you can see all the
parts work as the machine runs and copies RTTY. Also have a Model 28 KSR
in excellent condition removed from a radio station news room in active
service, and a Model 28 stand alone receive only typing
reperforator. Also, two model 15's on the way. So my collection is
growing as well. I have the offer of a Model 28 ASR but no where to put it
as of the present.
I was in the Army signal corps 1977-1979 during the last days of torn paper
tape RTTY relay stations and got to use some of the old equipment in actual
communications operations. Sadly those days are all gone and most of the
machines destroyed.
I plan to have a fully operational RTTY station up and running with Model
28's and model 15's by the summer. I just bought a used HAL ST-8000
demodulator and already have several others. I just wish there was more
commercial RTTY traffic on to monitor these days.
