The first UGC-74 I got from Fair radio seemed to have suffered some heat
damage since the internal paper rollers were entirely "liquified" and had
melted down into the machine's innards. I would wonder about its use in a
desert environment. (I also purchased an AS-1729/MX-6707 antenna base from
Fair and it was full of fine grains of sand...fresh from Desert Storm,
apparently).
The UGC-129 is a less rugged, but very feature-rich machine. Compact and
simple to use, although I had to blow up my first one to figure out the wiring
(then, of course, I finally bought a manual). the '129 uses standard "TTY"
ribbons, too. Anyone looking for a neat machine to play with, the 129 is the
way to go. I think we should donate all of the '74's to the war effort. They
could be dropped ("the mother of all boatanchors") on the bad guys.
Perhaps the guy on Ebay dropped one on his head.
