Just as Ben points our, the late 60's, early 70's were a
real transition period for Teletype systems. On my first week on
the job with New York Telephone on Long Island, (February,
1970) I was recruited, as the "new kid" to help install
a complete Model 28-based cross-office tape system. It had
several RT sets in cabinets, Model 28 sequence selectors and
lots of other neat stuff. Later on I learned that it was
an 83B3 system, talking to 28ASR's at field locations. The
system was so maintenance-intensive that we had a guy
assigned there full time.

Believe it or not, this system was being
installed at the Avis Rent-A-Car world headquarters.

Sad to say, this system didn't even last for one year and it got
surplanted by the beginnings of the Avis "Wizard" computerized
system. [the equipment was pulled out so fast, I never glot a chance
to scavage anything!]

Ma Bell continued to use torn-tape, Model 15/19-based
systems, internally until the late 70's.
