GA All,
If you recall the novel, and I believe the movie makes reference to
same, the problem with "cautery" (Directive 7-11) was that the M28's
bell was obstructed by a torn piece of the paper roll, and was not
alerting the ops to high precidence traffic. Now, I realize this has
been dramatized for literary and cinematographic suspense, but the whole
premise was that NOBODY? read any of the incoming messages, and they
presumably wound up on the paper winder --hi--.....
Pretty substandard watchstanding, to my viewpoint...had this RM1 been
the watch supr, there would have been some serious Capt's Masts in short
order, and some lazy ops would have enjoyed a quality diet of "piss and
punk" for 3 days"......hi--- What the movie doesn't of course show, is
that every incoming message has to be logged in, and since there is both
the local reperf spitting out tape for retransmission, as well as the
logger reperf creating permanent files, this would have been almost
immediately caught, since cheking the "bell " function was one of the
standard going on watch checks, since the "5 bells" signified "Z" or
Flash traffic, and woe betide he (sorry, there weren't any she's where I
was stationed), who missed any message, let alone a high priority one...
At any rate, the M28 was really the key to the whole story.. I'm
surprised that it wasn't specifically mentioned in the movie, especially
when the poor guys who were gonna get blamed found the bell jammed and
high precidence traffic in a pile of paper on the floor (I'm having
problems picturing the pile of paper, cause it just wouldn't have
happened, at least on my watch.

There was a Model 28, Model 35 and Model 33 (black!) all through the beginning of the movie. As soon as the TTY's lost stage center, I moved on to Law & Order.
