I'll have to remember that next time I successfully use cassette tape to 
  store RTTY data.  I've been doing so for years and NEVER had a 
problem.  Starting back in the early 80s, I would type stuff up on a HAL 
electronic RTTY terminal and record the audio onto a fairly good home 
cassette recorder and then take the tape out to the garage (where the 
Model 28s were) and play the audio using a cheap cassette portable into 
the ST-6 and cut a paper tape.  Then edit the pictures on paper tape (I 
could not do overstrike on the HAL).  I have also exchanged pictures 
with friends using cassette with no problems.
