Thanks Bob,

I will look at the timing.  The ribbon is inky on my fingers new.  The platen 
is just a small cylinder of bake-a-lite (sp).  Under the platen there is an 
aluminum disk with a pinhole in the center. There may be a rubber cushion under 
the aluminum.  Only a manual picture will tell.
