Hi Web:
If you have one of the Tempest Dovetrons, you just need to make a custom
cable. You need a cable with a couple of BNC plugs and a DB-9F (female)
connector The DB-9F is (properly, but less-commonly) also called a DE-9F
connector).
The DB-9F plugs into the PC's COM port, one BNC plug connects to the
dovetron's POLAR (232-in) jack, and the other BNC plug connects to the
dovetron's EIA-OUTPUT (232-out) jack.
The easiest way to make it would be to get an old BNC to BNC patch cable
(the coax can be anything: thick/thin/50-ohm/75-ohm...):
1) Cut the coax in half.
2) Strip the ends of each coax, twist the ground shields together, and
solder this ground to pin 5 of the DB-9F (GND).
3) Mark one of the BNC plugs "POLAR," and connect its center conductor to
pin 3 of the DB-9F (which is TXD, or data-out from the pc).
4) Mark the other BNC plug "EIA-OUTPUT," and connect its center conductor
to pin 2 of the DB-9F (which is RXD, or data-in to the pc).
If you are only going to receive, you only need the EIA-OUTPUT BNC, which
makes the cable even easier to make.
Then on your pc, fire up a baudot-capable terminal program like HeavyMetal,
RTTYArt, or even the old DOS TTYSIM ( even runs on XP, but is COM1-only)
and start tuning up your radio.
