Heath only made the DX-100 and the DX-100B. The
primary difference between the DX-100 and the DX-100B
were as follows:
The DX-100B used the "Apache" style green cabinet
rather than the larger two-tone gray of the DX-100B
The DX-100B only had one crystal control postition
instead of the four crystals in the DX-100.
There were two or three components changed in the
DX-100B in one of the 12BY7 stages (I believe that
these were resistor values).
The DX-100B used the 3-section variable capacitor for
the antenna loading instead of the 50 pf variable and
fixed switchable capacitors of the DX-100.
The back of the DX-100B chassis was pre-punched to add
the necessary connectors for conversion to allow the
SB-10 SSB adapter to be used.
The panel of the DX-100B said DX-100B and the panel of
the DX-100 said DX-100!
Now, Heath had a field conversion kit for the DX-100
that changed the loading capacitors from the small
variable plus fixed capacitors to the 3-section
variable. Transmitters thus modified were known as
the DX-100A. That is why Heath's next version was the
DX-100B and not the DX-100A
Both transmitters were often field modified with
another Heath conversion kit to add a VFO "spotting"
switch and to convert the keying to reduce the chances
of "chirping". However, this modification allowed the
VFO to run constantly whenever the transmit switch was
in the "on" position. Also, it added several
capacitors to "shape" the CW signal.
Heath also had available a kit to modify both the
DX-100 and the DX-100B to use the SB-10 SSB adapter.
The DX-100B had the holes to mount the SO-239
connectors already punched whereas in the DX-100 you
had to drill the holes. This kit added a switch to
the front panel for the purpose of switching the SB-10
in an out of the circuit.
My original DX-100 that I bought used in 1960 had the
"A" modification made. I installed the VFO spotting
switch modification. The DX-100 that I own now I had
to do the same thing with the spotting switch but it
also had been modified to the "A" configuration.
Some people changed the cabinet of their DX-100 to the
slightly smaller DX-100B version. This had been done
on my 2nd DX-100. Fortunately, I was able to find an
original DX-100 cabinet to restore it to the original
configuration.

I need a DX-100 manual copy. But weren't there
different versions of this TX? Are the differences
such that I need to make sure the manual I get matches
the version I have? How do I tell which version I
have?
