sounds as if you need to have the "ball channel cleaned out and the adjustments checked... there are a series of wedges that fit into a "roller ball channel" (i forget the exact name) when they get too full of old sticky oil and just plane dirt... they move very slow and cause the "hard movement" of the downward stroke...
