[GreenKeys] Apostrophe and Bell

Hi
Well any time you use the terms Standard and Ham in the same sentence
you run some risks ...
1) RSGB Teleprinter Handbook (1973) gives bell as figs J and ! as figs
S up front in the "standards" part of the book. Back in the back it
lists bell as figs J and ' as figs S on a Creed model 7. The same table
shows the bell as figs S for Teletype machines.
2) Navships 91393 (TT-47 / 49 / 69 / 70) shows the figs S bell.
3) Navships 93788 (Model 28) shows the figs S bell.
So we have the interesting situation that the British think that the
standard is American (Teletype) and the US Navy seems to think that the
standard is English (Creed).
Here's what's going on:
The CCIT (international) version of the code uses figs S as the bell.
The military gear is set up for international operation.
The US version of the code uses figs J as the bell. If your machine
came out of the Bell system or Western Union it's going to work this
way.
Gill has a great page about all this at
http://www.vauxelectronics.com/gil/tty/docs/smith--teletype-codes.htm
For what ever reason the ARRL seems to like the the US version rather
than the CCIT version. I kind of doubt that you will get the rest of
the world to agree with the ARRL on this particular point. Since
roughly half the machines in the US came out of the military (that's
only an wild guess) it's a toss up as to which standard to follow even
in the US.
Take Care!
