The reason hams all used the bell on S was simply that most of the
machines in amateur hands came from the Bell System or the military
or in general from sources other than Western Union. For a long time
W.U. was the only customer of Teletype buying J-Bell; everybody else
got S-Bell. I guess J-Bell was standard in Europe for a long time.
Western Union brought Telex to the U.S. in 1959, initially with mostly
European machines and then later was the major buyer of Model 32.
Sometimes in a ham QSO, where someone really wanted to get the attention
of the guy on the receiving end, you would see FIGS SJSJSJSJSJ, which
would print as ''''' or ,,,,, and ring the bells on all the machines,
regardless of how they were configured.
