Les,

Well Sir, that still seems like a noble task to me! And I have a
couple of off-the-wall ideas you may
want to consider ...the first and simplest, is to print them out on page
printer, 15, 28, 32, whatever,
and scan them in to a PC with OCR software, I've even seen tty fonts
available so you could laser
print them, and still maintain the look & feel of a "real" printer.

The second is to read the 5 level tape in an 8 level reader, 33, 35, 43,
or some higher speed CNC
tape reader, then write a little program, in BASIC or C, or Shell,
whatever your poison, to read a character,
bit shift, truncate as necessary and convert the string to ascii, and
preserve it for posterity, .....or until the first
"nuclear" (pronounced "new-cue-ler") holocaust, in which case the only
things that will work are the 12's, 14's,
15's and 19's, (and my Model A Ford), I think everything else has at
least one semiconductor. So, on
second thought, use a reperf and make paper tape copies! Aw man! Now
I'm depressed! Just think, we
could all be killed by a word our President can't even pronounce!
That's okay, I still remember how to
duck & cover ....that still works ...right????

Just Bob! ...reminding everybody that the positive thing about being a
pessimist, is that you are very rarely disappointed!

I wish you all even parity, in the data stream of life!
