Byron,

I don't have the answer but I seem to remember that most or all of the USB 
to RS-232 converters available nowadays do not support the slow data we 
need for TTY.  Do search the archives for this topic. At least one fellow 
who was familiar with the innards of the chip sets used told about the 
possibility of re-programming the thing but it sounded impractical to me.
