Yes, it's a considerable job. "First, save all the pieces" is the
mantra of the preservationist.
I'd prefer to know all that work was not in vain, so what would be the
most reliable method for extracting the data (each character) from all
those tapes? There are certainly tape readers that go directly to a
serial port, but would they handle the various types of tape in
these collections?
As you can see from the electronic collections assembled so far,
it's also tough to categorize these. They don't have filenames in
modern sense, so you need to invent them. Some of them are easy
to describe, others might be minor variations of the same image.
There might be a note scribbled on the end of the tape.
Do you want to put that in the electronic version?
It cries out for a database, but even the simplest organization
methodology would be a great help.
