Of course there are guys who want to use a 28 in radio and don't care
about pictures and would give their eye teeth to get those auto cr-lf
parts. You could effectively disable the auto-cr-lf, I think, simply
by adjusting it so it doesn't happen until the 80th column, tho I don't
know if the adjustment range goes that far.
Back in the days of Irv Hoff there was a scheme worked out for radio
use of the Model 28, and in those days we could still get parts to
implement it. I don't remember all the details, but it was something
like replacing the LF function bar with a CR bar so that if you get a
CR you will also linefeed, and thus won't get a typed-over line. And
use auto-cr-lf to protect against the loss of a CR. But there was more
to it - it's common to send a double CR at the end of a line, so it
had to suppress the second linefeed. And there was something about
suppressing multiple linefeeds because some prankster had started up
Irv's autostart and sent enough linefeeds to put a whole roll of paper
on the floor.
