On the other hand, it seems (to this outside and uninformed observer)
that W.U. never got as much benefit from its microwave system as it
needed to. Apparently they didn't get the TV network business. Their
own traffic was too small to justify such an expensive microwave network.
If they had done what MCI did they might have made it pay; but MCI had
to go through some tough legal battles to get their customers connected
to their system. Ultimately their microwave business lost in the same way
their wire business did - AT&T had far more bandwidth * miles than W.U.
ever had, so for AT&T serving digital communication was just a marginal
cost. Whereas for W.U. it was the whole game.
