Eugene,
As a general statement (may have nothing to do with your problem), many
rotating shafts in Teletype equipment were (are) hollow with felt wicks. Use only
non-detergent oil, either 5, 10 or 20 Weight depending upon ambient
conditions. Never ever put grease on felts. It will clog the pores and oil will never
get through the felt again. Some motor bearings take grease, but you have to
do at least a partial disassembly to apply it. Open holes, flip-up caps,
spring-loaded balls and all felts take oil.
You can't over-oil a Teletype machine.
