As I remember the Blue Box,
It used the "key pulsing" tones unique to toll boards....not DTMF of the TT
dial.
You had to make a toll call, send out the 2600 cycle "unhook" tone to get
you open-ended into a distant sender. You would keypulse in the number you
wanted and it would connect, minus the toll data.
The fone co. finally put "scanners" on the OGT's or outgoing trunks that
would look for an "unhook" tone and trace back to see who was doing this.
People did go to jail for this "theft of service".
The 2600 is no longer used as data travels on a seperate "pair" re: the call
data. I did hear a 2600 in a call to Haiti last year....probably one of the
last to use this.
This 2600 system is why women used to "laugh themselves off" by the tone of
their laughter hitting the unhook freq.
