Eugene reminded me that I also have a W2PAT TU with the W0HZR
tuning scope. This is the unit shown in the "New RTTY Handbook", built
be Ed, W8DTY, himself (yes, the EXACT one in the Handbook). I
also have the PK232 and a recently-acquired MFJ1278 (for PACTOR
on MARS, eventually). There was a neat TU design in 73 in the
late 70's, I think, that used tuneable active filters. I built it with
an LED tuning scope, similar to the Dovetron's. As with everything
from 73 Magazine, it didn't work right away and needed some
tweaking. But, it eventually turned out to be a pretty neat unit.
Then I graduated up to the Dovetron with the UART and
FIFO's, thanks to an ad in the YELLOW SHEETS.
My first TU with the Twin Cities unit with only one filter (an
old speaker transformner with a cap across it) and it worked
pretty well. Then I met Byron, W2JTP, and he tuned up a
pair for toroids for me. How could he say NO to a
15-year-old?
I have been trying to find the original W2BFD converter
schematics for years. This design came out in the early
1950's and it used tuned transformers as filters. And,
of course, lots of tubes.
73 to all,
