[GreenKeys] 28 type pallet fonts?

Russ and everyone else.

Thanks for all the great info. Several fine folk had responded with great and rather interesting information. A fine greenkeyer has offered to swap my gothic type box for a standard Murray. For my other Murray (the one from my KSR) I will indeed attempt to relocate the apostrophe.

One last item, I have a little more tinkering to do, but when I've exhausted my tiny brain, I will be checking into the list to ask what might cause my typing reperf in my ASR (toilet seat chads) to not properly reset the code bars after setting on "K" and using the loop to run the reperf. When I switch back to either KT or T (and disconnect the LPR from the loop) I get either 3 or 5 holes punching all the time no matter what character I press. If I take a small screw driver and lift up a little reset bail then it will work properly. I am consulting the manuals right now so either I can figure it out, or at least I can ask the list but use the correct terms for this reset bail such that everyone can have a foggiest what I am talking about.

thanks again to the list!
Eugene
BTW cant wait to loop my 28 ASR into my newly acquired URT-23! Of course, I first have to get the URT running-minor detail.

Subject: Re: [GreenKeys] 28 type pallet fonts?

Hi Eugene,

To answer your questions:

1. Has anyone compiled a list of all the type faces that were made available?

There is a Teletype Bulletin that covers the this subject in detail. Look for Teletype Bulletin 1164B, "Keytops and Typepallets".Section 6 of 7 covers the Model 28 and lists the Keylevers and Type Styles; Keylever Assemblies; Murray Style Pallets; Long Gothic Style pallets; Large Gothic Style pallets; Newly Released Keylever Assemblies; and Newly Released Pallets.

The Type Styles are further described as:

Murray 0.103"
Gothic 0.103"
Long Gothic 0.120"
Large Gothic 0.180"

In addition, Teletype Bulletin 1149B, "Parts, Model 28 Page Printer Set (KSR & RO)" has pictures of sixteen separate Type Box assemblies in Section 6.

2. Anyone have an extra "standard serif" pallet I could swap for or buy?

I don't have an extra type box, but there is always someone on the Greenkeys list who might have one available. Alternately, you might try to call Typetronics to see what Fred has available.

3. Was it popular to have a LTRS code to represent an apostrophe?

I don't remember ever seeing an apostrophe on the LRTS side of a type box but others may have move information. All of my typeboxes have the apostrophe on the FIGS side of the type box, either as the FIGS side of J or S.

4. Can I simply move the hammer from the LTRS section into the correct spot in the FIGS section? Will this work? How does one move these hammers?

Yes! It's not that hard if you have good eyesight and manual dexterity. You will need a small screwdriver or an embroidery hook and a bright light and possibly a good magnifying glass if your eyes are like mine. You will get your fingers dirty from the ink!

To remove the type box, push the small lever at the top right side of the type box to the right. Move the curved piece out of the way, and the type box will easily lift out. Note that the end of the type box with the hook on it goes to the left and the long stud is on the right side.

You need to remove both screws and nuts from each side of the type box and pry the two pieces apart. The unit that faces the type hammer will look like a screen with a lot of holes in it. Lay this piece aside.

Note that the typepallets are inserted through the screen that is closest to the ribbon and then a spring is slipped over the typepallet so the end of the hook will engage the slot in the typepallet. Use the small screwdriver or an embroidery hook to remove the end of the spring from the hole in the typepallet. You can slide the typepallet out of it's position. Be sure to make sure that you don't lose the spring. Move the typepallet to it's new position, and reverse the process.

Put the two pieces of the type box back together by holding them tightly together at each end and move back and forth until most of the typepallets pop through the rear screen. While holding one end with one hand, wiggle the ones that do not pop through by themselves until they do pop through. It's not a hard job at all and when all of the typepallets pop through, the two ends can be bolted together. Remember that the heads of the bolts are on the ribbon side and the nuts are on the type hammer side with the long one being on the right end as viewed from the type hammer side.

5. Were these (fractions) type pallets common?

Yes, I remember that the fractions type boxes were used for Brokerage service. There is also a weather type box that was used for Weather service.

You might consider converting each of your machine's keyboards and type boxes to match the same standard.
