John,

Windows 98SE is NOT a stable Windose edition. Relatively speaking, it's
more stable than Win95 and WinME (ugghhh!). Win2K is fairly stable and XP
is also good (for Microsoft, that is...).

A good, supported Linux version is REALLY stable and runs a whole bunch of
ham apps - some of them in native mode, some of them in Wine (a Windows
emulation program where you can load and run MS programs).
